Birthday Weekend

I was lucky enough to have my parents and brother come to town for by birthday weekend a couple of weeks ago. We realized that the 4 of us (well, 5 with Rachel) have all gotten together 6 times in the last 10 months. That’s a hell of a run considering we live in Palo Alto, Portland, and Houston. You know that it was a good weekend when you have a blast just listening to music and talking in the car when driving from place to place.

Friday Rachel had to work, but the 4 of us hit my Dad’s favorite breakfast spot in SF (a modest place on Lombard in the Marina called the Home Plate), did the Alcatraz tour, which was actually pretty interesting, hung out at a cafe in Sausalito, hiked in Muir Woods, and then booked it back down south to meet up with Rachel and have dinner at a Cuban place in Palo Alto called La Bodeguita del Medio, which was fantastic.

Saturday we hit the REI used gear sale for some ski and snowboard boots, then headed west to the coast. We stopped in the tiny coastal town of Pescadero, picked up some stuff from a local grocery store and had a nice little picnic outside while my mom hit the antique stores and boutiques. We then drove up to Half Moon Bay and walked on the beach at Pillar Point (where Mavericks is), and then drove back to Palo Alto to get cleaned up and head up to San Francisco for a ridiculously tasty meal at a hot spot called Flour + Water. Expectations were high for Rachel and i as we’ve been wanting to go there since it opened about a year ago but just never got around to it. Our sky high expectations were met and then some. After having desert at the restaurant, we walked a few blocks to our favorite ice cream spot, Humphry Slocombe, for round two for those us who were die hard desert fans (mostly my brother and i).

Sunday was breakfast at a coffee shop in Mountain View, a little hanging out in the park, a CD burning session, a little emergency shopping, papusas in Redwood City, birthday cake (seen above), and then it was time to take the fam to the airport. Why do these weekends always pass so quickly?

We did a pretty poor job of taking pictures (in terms of documenting the weekend, not the quality of pictures), but here’s a sampling of what we (mostly Rachel) got:
